The most common residential system: Split systems are comprised of an outdoor air conditioner and and indoor coil and furnace (gas or electric), utilizing duct work to distribute conditioned air throughout the home.

Mini-splits are perfect for homes without the space or accommodations for duct work. These systems work by combining outdoor units to indoor air handlers, which can be wall, ceiling or floor-mounted models.

Package units are an "all in one" type of system, where all heating and cooling components are housed in one outdoor cabinet. They can be installed on the ground or on the roof of a building.

A heat pump is an "all in one" electric system that heats and cools by moving heat. The cooling function is similar to a standard air conditioner, absorbing heat from inside and releasing it outdoors. The heating mode reverses the process.
HVAC contractors and manufacturers alike recommend professional bi-annual maintenance - once in the spring and once in the fall. This allows both the heating and cooling components of the system to be tested, tuned and inspected as the seasons change.
